Elizabeth Weight

Candidate for UDP Secretary

Elizabeth (Liz) Weight is a sixth generation Utahn, with roots in Sanpete County. She grew up in Brigham City and Bountiful, spending many weekends camping with her family in the Uintah Mountains. After graduating from Utah State University, she began her 32-year public school teaching career. From her work in the classroom, obtaining an MA degree from the University of Utah, and growing interest in how public policy impacts education, she became a spokesperson about the integral role of schools in communities. Liz served in leadership roles on school, district, and state levels, and in the American Federation of Teachers Utah. Currently, she is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Central Utah Federation of Labor and a board member of a senior living facility in Salt Lake City and a small water company in Midway.

As a Labor Caucus delegate in the Salt Lake County Democrats, Liz realized the importance of fair policy decision processes and the critical overlaps among employment, economy, and the natural environment in Utah, all related to the world our youth will live in.

In 2016, Liz was elected to the Utah House of Representatives and served three terms. She continues as a state Capitol tour guide and a community leader in West Valley City.

Liz and her husband met in the band that performed on Sunday evenings in Liberty Park. They were owner-instructors of the Alan Weight Music Studios, established in the 1970s.  Alan passed away in 1992. Their son, Joseph, is a business manager in Logan.
